Green Jane

The Patchwork Marriage

Michael Joseph/Penguin, London 2012

Galbraith3

This seems to be the ultimate family novel today: middle-aged woman Andie marries divorced father of two daughters, but cannot have a child of her own. So she pours all her love into her new family, which the elder daughter Emily just does not appreciate, although her biological mother is an irresponsible alcoholic.

When Emily, at seventeen, in orgies of drugs and sex gets pregnant and refuses to have an abortion, Andie looks forward to raise the baby as her own, but Emily fights for her baby and a heartbreaking conflict is the consequence.

But all´s well that ends well, how very moving.
